Pioneers of editing

Pioneers of editing.

Editing started with Edwin Stanton Porter, an employee of Thomas Edison.
Porter was the first to use intercutting; a technique where two shots that are not related to each other are put together to create an emotional impact on the audience.
Life of an American Fireman was the first film to use this technique; switching between the people in the burning house to the firefighters then the same technique was used in The Great Train Robbery switching between the robbers riding away and the little girl untying the unconscious man.
The intercut became revolutionary in the world of film.

D.W Griffiths, much like Porter, also came up with- and used frequently- New techniques that changed the world of film and editing entirely. He created the close up, parallel action, and flash backs.

Thelma Schoonmaker was born on the 3rd of January 1940 in Algiers, Algeria. Schoonmaker attended New York University for post graduate work in summer. It was there where she met Martin Scorsese they connected instantly and they worked on the film Who's That Knocking on My Door? in 1967. However Schoonmaker and Scorsese did not work together again until Raging Bull in 1980. They then worked on 16 more films together. including Goodfellas, Gangs of New York, Cape Fear, and The Age of Innocence.

Raging Bull is arguably one of the greatest films ever to be made made and has been nominated for 8 Academy awards and won 2- for Best acting and best film editing.

Sounds Great!

TASK 1A CASE STUDY

You must analyse 4 speech package sourced from a range of radio station.

For each speech packages you will identify the following:

4
The RADIO STATION it was broadcast on (Time of day & name of programme)
The PURPOSE of the speech package (i.e. informs, educate or entertain)
The programme GENRE
The AUDIENCE at which the package was targeted
And a brief ANALYSIS of the CONTENT. Identifying the reporters delivery, pace and language register.

The story of pop (Episode 8- 'Teenagers in love')

BBC Radio 6. It was aired first on a Tuesday afternoon at 4:00 when parents are picking up their children from school so we can determine that the target audience is middle class women aged around 25-40 that live in the suburbs with children. The presenter uses formal language and is part of the older generation

The purpose is to educate and entertain by teaching the history of teenage pop idols in the 50's and 60's

The speech package has a music bed of a popular song from The Belmonts a band from the 50's specifically the song A Teenager In Love which was placed as no. 5 in the billboard hot 100 in 1959.
It also has an interview with one of the old band members called Dion DiMucci how recalls how he was too embarrassed to sing the 'Doo-Wop' parts of the songs.

BBC Radio 5
Sunday 3:30 14th

The presenter of this speech package is a middle aged Caucasian male in a fast paced tempo. The programme genre is sports

The speech package has an interview with one of the players discussing how basketball is become increasingly popular in England.
The purpose of the speech package is to entertain the target audience which is young adult males that may play basketball regularly or have a strong interest in it.

The speech package includes background noise from one of the games and the pre-recorded sounds of a basketball hitting the court

BBC World service
The why factor
11:32
Monday 10th December

The speech package is about fear in films and how audiences deliberately go out to scare themselves and how they became addictive, it is informing the audience but at the same time it is entertaining them to a extent. It has a music bed of organ music (a common theme in scary films) and has several recorded sounds of a baby crying.

The presenter is a middle aged male who is speaking in a clear british accent at a slow pace.

The target audience is middle aged intellectuals or film fanatics or people who enjoy learning about the human mind.

The speech package has two interviews-  one with a woman who had just watched The Shinning in a cinema and a BFI curator who discusses how we as an audience related to the characters in the film as we find out information at the same time.
It also has a sound extract from the film The Shining.

TASK 1B SUMMARY
Producer a brief summary on your speech package case studies. Compare the differences between the packages considering the target audience for each package.
200-500 words.

Each speech package will have a different target audience according to the content of the speech package. Some speech packages with the genre of music may appeal to younger audience members such as teenagers or young adults and other genres such as history or news may appeal to older audiences such as middle aged or seniors.

The speech packages I analysed are similar in target audiences as the radio stations are the same so they will more likely have the same target audience.

16.1.1

The Gloaming

What is editing?
The process of removing, adding and manipulating source material to create footages and scenes before joining it together to tell a story.

What is Elliptical editing?
A shot that suggests what may have happened in a scene. E.g. a shot of the girl dozing by the fire at night and then the next scene where she wakes up suggesting to the audience that she went to sleep.

Why are long shots used?
It’s used to remind the audience where they are.

What is ‘non-diagetic sound’?
The character can’t hear the music but the audience can.

How do we know she is bending down to pick up the ring? (What shots are used and why?)
She looks down at the floor and then a close up is shown after of her hand picking up the ring and then a shot of her looking at the ring in her hand as the audience makes the connection that she picked up the ring.

Hustle
Overhead establishing shot – what does this achieve?
Sets out the space where the action takes place and where the characters positions within the room. And improves the status of the character standing looking down.

What is Shot-Reverse-Shot?
Cutting back and forth between the two shots with different characters but it is still the same scene.

What is Eye-line matching?
Where the characters in different shots have the same line of sight e.g. the standing man is looking down in the scene and the seated man is looking up in the scene it gives the audience the impression they are looking at each other. Also uses shot-reverse-shot.

Why do we cut to the other members of the group?
So the audience can see they’re reaction to the plan and each other.

What is a wipe?
A video transition that ‘wipes’ away the old scene and at the same time replaces it with the new setting.

What is the effect of using quick cuts?
It gives a fast paced feel to the film rhythm and keeps the story moving along and the audience on their toes.

UNIT 29

MUSIC VIDEO PRODUCTION

    Music Video Production Assessment Book

Task 1 (a): Write a critical evaluation of the purpose of music videos, with examples.

1. SELL SONGS.
Some music videos are used to sell the songs the artist is singing. By using a music video the song can become more known and audiences can identify and associate the song with the music video and the artist so it becomes more well known among viewers and listeners. e.g 'Gangnam Style' by PSY- The song is associated with the dance moves and as the dance becomes more well known the song also becomes popular and the artist credibility goes up.

2. UNDERSTANDING OF SONG.
Other music videos are used to give the audience/Listeners a better understanding of the song using narrative video telling a story witch coincides with the meaning behind the song. The video 'Familiar taste of poison' by Halestorm is a good example it is a story of a detective trying to find out what happened to the wife as she is found dead in the pool it is then revealed that she was poisoned by her husband after finding out his secret.

3.ENTERTAIN.
Music videos are also used to entertain the audience using the artists skills such as dancing or singing or any other talents they have this impresses the audience and they look in the artists other music video to find the same talents.
Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' is a good example- it entertains it's audience with the amazing costumes and Michael Jackson's dancing skills that is still influences music today.

4. DVDS AND CD'S.
Creating a music video means that the record companies that own the artists can also sell DVDs and Cd's including the video to create a memorabilia for the video towards the audience. Most artists that do this are often boy bands such as Take that and One direction where the music videos have been a part of DVDs of concerts.

5. PROMOTION.
Music videos can be used as a device to promote the artist or the song so it becomes more well known in the music industry and as more audience consumes the video they become more well known as the song becomes more popular. Carly Rae Jepsen has used this with her video 'Call me Maybe' which has become popular on the internet and has made her very well known.

Task 1 (b): critically evaluate the styles and conventions of music videos with examples.

1. Rock.
Rock music tend to have dark settings and quite abnormal locations such as places that aren't easy to get to. When artist are in a 'rock' band or their music is rock they tend to have a very distinctive look- tattoos, dark clothing, leather and heavy make up and this is shown in their music videos and often the music videos center around religious imagery or a romantic relationship. The Pretty Reckless Just Tonight is a good example as it is set in a dark location which isn't very clear, it contains a lot of religious imagery with candles and roses with focus on Taylor Momsen as she is the lead singer.

2. Pop.
Pop music videos tend to be in more lighter settings in very open spaces such as beaches or fields. they are normally performance based with long dance routines it is usually upbeat and fast sounding. Pop musicians also wear the latest fashions in bright colours and eye catching prints. The backstreet boys often uses dancing as the bases of their music videos and are seen wearing very sporty clothing that is easy to dance in.

3. Hip Hop/Rap.
Hip hop/rap music videos often share the same traits of a pop music video- set in rural areas with bright lighting in large buildings. Hip hop/Rap videos also often feature attractive women, fast cars and money and the artist themselves often wear designer clothing and jewelry- and indication of wealth and power. 50 cent is a good example of a rapper who uses very typical conventions in his music videos- attractive women, expensive living, jewelery and so on.

4. Country
Country music videos are often set in a narrative perspective using the video to describe whats happening in the song. The rtist nearly always features and has a main part in the narrative  Often set in very rural areas. Country musicians often wear plaid button downs, jeans and cowboy boots - a typical outfit of 'cowboys' and people who work in rural areas in the country who are most likely to sing and listen to. In Blake Shelton's Some beach the artist is narrating his song turning into a story almost as he sings it plays out on the screen for example: ‘I sit in that waiting room, seemed all afternoon’ and it is shown that he is sitting in a dentists office waiting to be seen. His music video is set in a rural town obviously very near the countryside and the artist is wearing typical ‘cowboy’ clothing- jeans, boots a denim over shirt and a cowboys hat.

5. Indie.
Indie music videos are alike to pop and rock music videos sometimes set in dark locations and sometimes in rural areas. There is more narrative in indie music videos rather than rock but there is slightly longer shots and slower change between shots. The artists often dress in conventional indie clothing, skinny jeans, pumps, t shirts, vest tops, denim and usually have long-ish hair. The Vaccines Post break-up sex is a good example as the band is wearing typical indie clothing with long hair and the music video has very low lighting so it is a very dark setting.

6. Alternative.
Alternative music is a often a mix between rock and another music genre often pop or indie. The music is often narrative- describing something that has happened to the artist or their outlook on certain topics. They typically wear skinny jeans and T-shirts like indie musicians but they have their hair done in very 'urban' and 'modern' ways often following what is 'trendy' and tattoos much like rock musicians. The music has a distinctive sound of pop as well as rock. Alternative artists often poke fun at themselves in music videos or others which makes it less serious than rock but can be more serious than most pop music videos. All time low- I feel like dancin' is a very obvious alternative music video leaning towards pop as the sub genre instead of indie- in the video the artists are all wearing the same sort of clothing as each other; Skinny jeans, T--shirts and 'modern' haircuts and in the video they poke fun at the music industry including several other mainstream artists.

TASK 1 PART I

Telling Lies vs. Soft

Hannah Gowdy

Telling lies vs. Soft

Simon Ellis

Telling lies and Soft are both short films directed by Simon Ellis, Telling lies was filmed in 2000 and Soft 2006 both were film in England.

Although both Telling lies and Soft have a theme of relationships- telling lies being more obvious- Telling lies is looking at the relationships of the protagonist (Phillip) has with his Mum, Ex-Girlfriend, Friend and an older woman he has had a short affair with. On the screen as the characters talk is what they really mean behind their lies so we find out that Phillip’s friend has slept with his ex and is planning to do so again and we find out that Phillip has been cheating on an older and richer woman who wants nothing more than a one off. The use of the words on screen gives a dynamic to each person’s relationship to each other with the size of their writing, how it is typed and so forth.

Soft looks at the fragile relationship of the father and son in the story but it also looks at the theme of fear and confrontation as the father encounters a group of youths that terrorise both him and his son as the audience watches the film it is obvious that the father has problems with confrontation. Soft is set in a middle class street giving the film an edgy and raw feel as what people do in fear.

Both short films have a tense atmosphere and feel about them as they play on the audiences emotions and senses- having very little non diegetic music so the audience is on an edge.

Analyses of Videos
(Viral Marketing & User generated)

Viral Marketing is a form of marketing techniques used to create brand awareness. A viral marketing video uses a short clip of animation or live action to advertise the brand for the social networking society.

Viral
Audi R8 "The Hostage"

In the advert a woman parks her car in an empty parking zone as she gets out of the car a man dressed in black walks past, a security guard then attempts to stop the man from leaving. the man points his gun at the Audi R8 and threatens to shoot if he is not let go, the guard complies and the man gets into a van and drives off.

The target audience for this advertisement would be people who can drive aged 21-45 are in middle or working class who can afford to buy cars or need to have cars to drive to work.

The video is seen on the video site of the digital platform, the video site is known as Youtube but it will also been seen on Television or on social networking websites.

The purpose of this video is to persuade the audience that they need this car and that they should purchase it the advert does this by describing the car as "Already a classic" which suggest to the audience that if they buy this car they will not need another one for a long time.

The image quality is of a high standard being filmed with a professional camera it's sound quality is clear and the editing uses back to back and cross cutting shots.

Cat herding

The advertisement starts with a young male adult talking to the camera about his great, great grandfather being the first ‘Cat herder’ in the family it then has a few small interviews with the other ‘cat herders’ and small clips of the everyday activities they have to do and what they face (E.g. rolling a ball of yarn, getting cats of the tree, getting scratched on the face)

The idea is that they herd cattle of cats instead of cows which is more difficult as there are more cats and more difficult to ‘herd’ the cats are suggested at being ‘ideas’ while the ‘cat herders’ are the EDS company that ‘round up’ the ideas.

The target audience for the advert would be potentional and existing business’.

The videos was shown at the Super Bowl 2000 and has gained nearly 1 million hits on youtube.

User Generated

Fenton the dog.

Evolution of dance
