UNIT 6: Task 3

AUDIENCE THEORIES

The hypodermic needle theory- also known as the magic bullet theory is the thesis that the direct influence used by the media can have a powerful and immediate effect on the audience consumer.

The theory came about the same time as the boom in different media platforms (Television and radio in the 1930's) and suggested that mass amounts of media consumers were easily enveloped and influenced by what they saw and heard and have been manipulated by the media creators.

The theory has been applied to several media texts over the decades- from comic books in the 50's and rap music in the early 2000's, by many different types of people such as parental figures, politicians and peer pressure groups in fear that they may become violent and engage in sexual situations.
